How to: Disassemble Your Engine

How to: Disassemble Your Engine

Here is a little generic how to in regards to the complicated task of engine disassembly, I know it can be a difficult task and there are many mistakes to be made. Read and learn.

I'll start assuming you have already removed the motor from the chassis, a tip when doing that is just to take the engine out with the motor mount, no need to separate them usually. If you want you can do so when the motor is out. Be gentle with the carb linkage to not strain it in the removal as well. I will not go deeply into the drive train side removal, as that is a subject that is quite different from this. However it is not difficult to remove, but does get to be quite tricky upon reinstallation. Assume from here that it is already removed.

Step UNO/ONE/UN/you get the point

The first and most important thing you should do is clear a space to do this work and make sure its spotless. I recommend this for doing any work on your RC, but its more important with the engine. You could layout some handle towels for doing this from now. Layout your tools as well, usually you will only need a 2.5 or 2mm allen key, a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, a marker and a glow plug driver/wrench.

Step One
Pull off the air filter assembly and while the engine is all together give it s quick spray from some sort of cleaning solvent. Let it sit for a few minutes, this helps to keep any mess that's on the outside from getting into the inside.

Step Two
Remove the header with exhaust pipe (usually secured by spring cables) and put aside. Remove the carburetor screw and then slide off the carburetor assembly. Remove the glow plug being careful not to lose the gasket. If you have a pull starter to remove its usual a good idea to apply a piece of tape over the open side of the pull-start mechanism to hold it all together.

Step Three
Loosen and remove the back plate/side plate from the engine block and follow that by doing the same to the cooling head. these are usually all secured by allen type screws.

Step Four
Now we are getting deeper into the engine. If your engine utilizes "head button" or Under Head" at the base of the cooling head, it is a good idea before you remove it to make a little mark showing its positioning in relation to the block. Do this at the front of the button right in the center. Or, Top Dead Center. Gently, so very gently remove those thin head gaskets (usually 3),you cannot afford to scratch, chip, dent or bend those and they are fragile so it can easily happen. That is one of the major parts dictating compression.

Step Five
Now its time to go inside the block and remove the cylinder sleeve. Crank the piston/rod assembly to its lowest position. You can use anything that's small and non-abrasive to slide into one of the port (see openings in the side of the sleeve). Now slowly and gently turnover the engine manually, this will ease the sleeve out if done correctly. Be careful and pay attention to what I said, Non-Abrasive. You do not want to scratch or blemish the internals at all. Note: some sleeves, especially in higher compression engines can be quite difficult to remove.

Step Six
Now you have clear access to the mechanical internals. Use that marker again to mark the position of rod and piston so you can can re-install it in the same position of you are doing so. Turn the engine case partway on its side, and slide the piston and rod gently out through
the opening where the head was with your fingers. Take note that there are very small pieces involved here that you do not want to lose if you intend to re-use. I am referring to the retainers and cross pin.

Step Seven
Go back to the bottom end, you now have access to the crankshaft. You can once again gently slide it out. You may have to lightly tap or twist it to get it out. Just take it easy.

Just lay out those parts neatly now, and thats it. You have successfully disassembled you nitro burning motor.
